PEBBLE BEACH — Over the years, the 18th green at Pebble Beach has been the scene of much drama.

Thursday, the drama involved whether Meghan McCurley would say “yes.”

She did.

“I felt like I had to do something different than just take her out to dinner or something,” said Mark Hubbard, a former San Jose State golfer who decided he would cap off his first round at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am by proposing marriage to McCurley.

The plan, hatched by Hubbard and McCurley’s mother, worked to perfection. Hubbard putted out at the 18th green, then walked to his golf bag and pulled out the engagement ring. He gestured to McCurley to come inside the ropes as the video board flashed: “Meghan, Will You Marry Me?”

“I didn’t even see the video board until someone told me to look around,” said McCurley, who met Hubbard seven years ago at San Jose State while she was on the swimming team there. “I was so surprised.”

Before McCurley could reach Hubbard alongside the green, he was down on his knee to officially ask for the hand of McCurley, a Sacramento native. Hubbard is from Colorado.

“Originally, I had just thought to put the proposal on the caddie bib or something like that,” Hubbard said. “When they told me we could get it up on the video board, though, I was like, sold.”

Hubbard, a 25-year-old Tour rookie, wound up shooting a par 72 and said he avoided getting nervous about the proposal until he reached the final hole.

“I wasn’t thinking about it until I ran my first putt about two feet past the hole,” said Hubbard. “I was like, ‘It would really suck to three-putt right now. Don’t do that. So I was pretty glad I made that second putt for a par.”
